July 25, 1915: “COWS’ EARS CHEWED BUT ATOLIA RANCHER FREED, CRUELTY CASE—Barstow, July 24.—H. N. Roundtree, a homesteader near Atolia upon whom Constable Brown served a warrant yesterday after a 100-mile automobile ride across the burning desert, was tried before a judge om Justice T. O. Carter’s court today and acquitted on a charge of cruelty to animals. Roundtree was accused of urging his dogs on cattle that overrun his property and the complainant brought into court as evidence cows that had their legs badly chewed and their ears bitten to shreds.  Roundtree was acquitted because it could not be proved that his dogs did the mutilation.” –San Bernardino County Sun
